To help ensure success when you start a disc golf course it helps to start a support group. That organization usually takes the form a disc golf club. The club has to stay solvent so expect to raise money. When money is involved it is best to get a business license and a bank account.

Now that you are legit you can ask to be a distributor of discs – which can help your club raise money. The more people you can get involved and interested the better your chances of success. KEEP IT SIMPLE.

Organize a group of at least 3 like minded individuals.

Set your short term and long term goals

Get a small business license

Get a bank account

Assemble the initial Board of Directors with these suggested positions:

President

Vice president

Secretary

Treasurer

Public Relations Director

League Director

Tournament Director

Focus on promotion

Host Tournaments (One day minis work)

Establish a Disc Golf League – Set up at least one program that people can play on a weekly basis.

See if you can get a monthly mini – tournament started. League fees can help a disc golf club achieve its goals.

It helps to have regular meetings and publish a regular newsletter or start a website. The point is to keep people informed. If you want a website for your disc golf club contact me

According to the PDGA, disc golf clubs are often made-up of 5% leaders, 5% doers, and 90% baggers. Set your expectations accordingly. Not everyone will have the same motivation or commitment to club projects and programs. Expect frustrations and be sure to give thanks and praise to those who do help, because that will probably be their only compensation.

Disc golf clubs go through different phases as they grow:
Phase 1 – Course Development and Construction.
Phase 2 – Club Start-up / Honeymoon.
Phase 3 – Growth / Burnout / Regroup (Repeat).
Phase 4 – Expansion (Additional courses / Repeat Phases 1 & 3) or Dissolve the club

A disc golf club is made of people with personalities, egos, and agendas. As you grow, you will go through periods of conflicts with leadership, personality conflicts, and fragmentation into cliques. The success of your disc golf club can depend upon how you deal with these issues. You don’t all have to be friends; you just have to find a common ground for consensus. Just remember, this is about a game and having fun.

What do you pack to survive the round? Disc golf in the summertime is great, but it helps to be prepared in case of injury. Lately I am packing the stuff needed to survive the round in the summer.

Gatorade/Water. Take everywhere. Consider buying a cooler. I attach my cooler to my disc golf cart. Gatorade has potassium which helps stop cramps and hydrates on those days when its 95 degrees out with 80% humidity.

Sunscreen. Use brands with an SPF of at least 20 or 30 that block both UVA and UVB rays. Also buy “waterproof” sunscreen, which is different from “water resistant” types.

Sunburn relief. Aloe vera gel and medicines with acetaminophen or ibuprofen, including Tylenol, Advil or Motrin, can reduce pain.

Treatment for bug bites & stings. Calamine lotion or hydrocortisone creams, as well as an antihistamine such as Benadryl, help reduce itching and swelling. Cold compresses can soothe bee and wasp stings, as can a paste of baking soda and water. If you know you’re very allergic, ask your doctor about a portable injection that can ward off serious complications.

Tweezers for ticks. To remove ticks, grasp them as close to the skin as possible and gently pull them straight out. I haven’t forgotten the hitch hikers I picked up the last time I played Central Florida. Keep a pair in your first aid kit.

First Aid Kit. Target has great one, made by Johnson and Johnson, for 99 cents. It doubles as a stash box and fits in your disc golf bag or disc golf cart. I buy extra items such as various sized bandaids, scissors, antisceptic, antibiotic ointment, and gauze and I have a bigger kit in my car.

Optional Items:
Smudge Stick:This is an alternative to insect repellent. It smells nice and helps keep bugs off.

Lighter:Use it to melt the frayed nylon ends of your disc golf equipment, light your camp fire, or light up that lady golfer’s cigarette .

Multi-Tool:I like the Leatherman. Use it to repair just about anything on your golf cart. Leatherman also has great flashlight for those glow golf rounds or for when you camp at the course.

Folding Stool:A good folding chair is easy to carry, lightweight, and it can lower your golf score on those longer courses. Mike Barnett sells my favorite one

Tell me what you are packing lately. Disc Golf Survivalism is what it is all about on those tournament weekends at challenging courses

Gee, its only the 21st century, why isn’t your disc golf club on the web yet? You can use the power of the web to help support your disc golf club. How? With a website you can inform your members and raise money. Here is a list of things you can do with a disc golf website:

Post club announcements

Bulletin board/discussion board

Sell stuff

Educate the masses

Let people know you exist

Increase your membership

How do you get your disc golf clubon the web? Well for starters you have to register a domain name and find a Web Host.

Click here to have me help you with this

Already have a Web Host and a disc golf website, but have a question on design or troubleshooting?

Email Me With Your Question

Now that you have a Web Host you can design the site yourself or have someone else do it. If you do it yourself I suggest using one of these free yet powerful software packages to get you started:

Joomla (download)

Wordpress (download)

Drupal (download)

Kompozer (download)

You may want to start with Kompzer or your Web Host’s DIY website creator if you have never made a website before.

Now you have a website what do you put on it?

I would start with the basics and inform your public. Post this kind of info:

League times

Disc golf course locations (Try Google Maps!!)

Club and membership info

Upcoming tournaments

Upcoming events

News

Later on your disc golf club can branch out into more advanced website features:

Discussion Board

eCommerce

Online tournament registration

Google ads

So you see, you can use a website to get new disc golf club members, inform your current members, raise money, raise awareness, and show everyone where the disc golf course is.

Recently I read an article by a Lt. Col. Earl Rynerson about the now defunct American Golf Course. As Disc Golfers we should stand at the ready to support measures like these that can help make Fort Lauderdale a “smart city”. This particular piece of land is being looked at as a possible place for development. As you all know, the word DEVELOPMENT inspires images of poured concrete and pavement – which is all to often the case in Fort Lauderdale.

Lt. Col. Rynerson, or Earl, as he likes to be called, states “I feel that our leaders in Broward County and in the City of Fort Lauderdale should approach the developers/investors and offer to purchase the property from them, and turn it into a “People’s Park” for us, the residents of Fort Lauderdale.”, and I could not agree more. This park would benefit the local businesses as well. A destination like this would bring tourists from around the world. Heck, even New York City has its Central Park. The impact to the surrounding neighborhood would be minimal, but the obvious benefits would be great.

Yes, I would like to see Disc Golf here (after all, I am biased), but as a resident I want to see this wonderful and safe place for residents to enjoy jogging, cycling, picnicking, walking, rollerblading, Disc Golfing, etc., preserved. ESPN might like to make The American Golf Course the location for the Pro Beach Volleyball semifinals, with the finals held at the South Beach in Fort Lauderdale. Such an event would draw visitors from all over. Lets do all we can to help concerned citizens like Lt. Col. Earl Rynerson. I suggest a fund raiser for our favorite charities in the form of a Disc Golf tournament to make the people aware of this wonderful future public park.

Why would Disc Golf be such a good addition to the amenities of this park? For starters, Disc Golf provides a LOW COST way to add recreational and healthy lifestyle outlets for the local community and provides a setting that will attract Disc Golfers from the surrounding communities and from around the world for tournament play. A Disc Golf course can be added for less than the cost of a concrete basketball court – which only a handful of people can play on – and 100 people can play Disc Golf at once without interfering with each other or other park activities. Mom, dad, brother and sister can (and do) play the same game competitively. Disc Golf is the ultimate family sport and can be installed right alongside all of the other park amenities. This is why Disc Golf has more bang for the buck than any other family oriented park activity.

Earl’s proposal can be seen here.: A “People’s Park” for Fort Lauderdale?

Earl’s website can be seen here: A Better Ft Lauderdale
